These are some of the smallest ones. All of the paper has rough, torn edges (as in the first photo), though only some of these photos reflect that, and is 300 lb. Fabriano paper so it is nice and thick.

Starting today and running through next Sunday (4/22/2018), I will have a big sale in My Shop. 30% off all original paintings. I decided to do this before adding my newest work, to sort of have a clear out, and after the sale I might pull the remaining work out of the shop (or I might leave a few, we shall see). I just felt it was time to freshen things up in a bit. I hope you will take a look.Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10875305968239664790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889401692222940111.post-28084867492368957582018-04-06T19:15:00.000-07:002018-04-06T19:15:52.547-07:00Art After Dark - Open Studios

Join us next Thursday, October 12, from 6-8 p.m. for our studios quarterly event: Art After Dark. This one will include a show in our classroom with myself and Bonnie Hull with some paintings from our pink gesso party. We gessoed some paper (pink, why not?), drew the lines of the room, and followed it from there with no rules or expectations. I just let whatever inspiration came which included things like the eclipse, the light of the room, and things around the Mill. If you follow me on Instagram you will have had a sneak peak at some of the pieces.

Also happening is an exhibit downstairs in the Eco Hub in honor of our studio mate who passed recently, Rollie Wisbrock, which I'm sure will be wonderful. Also in house you will find Max Marbles Bookbinder and Frank Barnett Photography.

I hope you if you are in town you can join us. My studio door will be open and I'll likely be right out side of it in the classroom for the show.Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10875305968239664790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889401692222940111.post-21707219641615429212017-08-02T20:36:00.000-07:002017-08-02T20:36:21.168-07:00This weekHoly smokes, it is hot out. 106 degrees today with a prediction of 109-110 tomorrow, which would be a record for this area.

Despite the heat, I've been busy at work in the studio. A few things I've been working on (I'm hoping to fill that wall up in the coming weeks):

I've been working on some less detailed, more expressionistic paintings. Starting with some still lives and also a bit of landscape (even more abstract in the landscape). You can see those in the images above. They are acrylic on paper (300 gsm).

I also started experimenting with monoprints. I have a lot to learn, but it is a fun process. Here are a few that I was pleased with:

Then I've been working on another project that will culminate in a show with Bonnie Hull at our studios. This will be on display in the October Open Studios. To start with, we gessoed, with a rather pink gesso, 6 large pieces of paper. I've only just started working on mine as you see on the table here:

And here a different one inspired by the upcoming eclipse. My city will be inundated with visitors as we have one of the prime locations to view the event, so it is quite the topic of conversation around here:

And I will leave you with this hot squirrel trying to cool its belly on the wire...

Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10875305968239664790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889401692222940111.post-83289586290065124752017-07-26T06:26:00.001-07:002017-07-26T06:26:30.202-07:00This weekGreetings! It has been busy week at my house as one summer camp for my daughter comes to a crazy end. She participated this year in Children's Educational Theater and while it is a lot of fun and great learning, it is a very taxing schedule culminating in a lot of rehearsals and performances during the last week. The schedule does afford me a little extra studio time, though, so that is where I have been.

So far this week, I have finished one larger painting (will share soon) and have begun experimenting with linen again. I really enjoy painting on linen, particularly when I use my own cut linen pieces. You might remember such work as this from last year:

Last week I made this piece in my sketchbook:

Not sure exactly what is going on there, but that is often the case in my sketchbooks. The idea is to play with ideas, form, and color. And then I had the idea to do cut pieces of linen, attach them to paper (for support), and then gesso them with a tinted gesso and follow it with a quick painting and or drawing. The paper I used to back them is likely not heavy enough, but this is just an experiment and I do think they look quite nice:

Next up, I am going to try attaching the linen to the wooden panels I use so often. As it happens, I am ready for some more experimentation. After working on some larger, more detailed work I would like to make some smaller pieces more quickly, rapid brushstrokes focusing on form and color and less on polished details. The next couple of months will have me pushing my comfort zone away from the smooth to the rough and thicker paint.Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10875305968239664790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889401692222940111.post-75681041465218728902017-07-24T16:54:00.000-07:002017-07-24T16:54:06.693-07:00ResponseIf you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen this painting back in April. I call it "Spring Ahead." I started painting it shortly after the time change, which hit me particularly hard at the time. Here is the painting:

An artist friend of mine, Kay Worthington, reached out to me and a lovely conversation took place resulting in her taking the piece and in return creating me this amazing quilt as a response piece:
I was so inspired by the process that I decided I would then make another painting in response to her quilt. That piece is still underway and it has been really interesting deciding what to pull from her piece and bring forward into the next one and what new ideas I want to include. I will share that once it is complete and who knows what might come next...?Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10875305968239664790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889401692222940111.post-1139777689067650882017-07-18T16:03:00.001-07:002017-07-18T16:03:54.714-07:00Quietly ReturningI know, it has been so quiet on my blog for the last several months. I've been working away on new projects and ideas, working them through and thinking about what is next. Sometimes, when I work like this, I am reluctant to share my progress. But I think I am ready now to stop in more often (hopefully at least weekly) and share how things are going. (No promises, though!) I have several new ideas I have not yet explored and I will share those with you in the coming weeks. For now, a painting I meant to share awhile ago, this is "Tulip Triptych":

This Thursday the studios I am a part of will be having our quarterly event and I will be there with my studio door open. See the card below for details and I hope if you are in town you are able to join us and say hi!

I mentioned in the last post I've been working on some new pieces that are a bit different from what has come before, at least recently anyway (though I always find connections with earlier work when I think I am on to something new). The two above will be on display along with two others (and maybe a third if I can manage it). I will share more of these soon.
This is a new painting just added to my shop. Lately I've been drawing images out of the abstract, something I've not done for awhile. Basically, while working on another piece I will apply my leftover paint to the next surface. Then, I will start from whatever shapes I find there (and likely whatever is on my mind at the time) and will use that as my starting point. This new painting, the first of at least a few from this way of working, is now in my shop.
These two ladies I completed more than a year ago and for some reason never shared them. I have been very quiet on the blog as of late, but have been busy painting throughout. I have some new paintings in progress that remind me a bit of these two, so it seemed the perfect time to post them now in advance of the new work. These two are now available in my shop.
Good morning. It is a stormy day here, rain is pounding on the windows as I type and my dog is hovering at my feet. I thought I would finally share some photos of my studio I took recently. It is a wonderful space, though you'll see the light is not always perfect (especially for photos). It is in the same building as my previous studio. I'm still settling in so it probably looks cleaner and more sparse than it will in the future. You will also see some peaks at the abstract paintings I've been working on lately. More are in progress, I will share those another day. On to the studio...

Join us this Thursday for Art After Dark. Open Studios, an artist reception and demonstration downstairs in the Straub Environmental Center, and more! Several of us, including myself (photos to follow soon), have moved into different studios and we are welcoming a new artist to the group. The show is Insight & Imagination and is curated by the artist Dayna Collins. It features some amazing local artists with some of their smaller pieces (as you will see it is in a display case with only so much room) and we were also asked to bring a few tools to include in the display, giving the viewer a peak into how the pieces were created or imagined.

Here are a few photos I took of the show, but keep in mind I am photographing a display case with glass and there were students studying nearby so I was very conscious of the clicking noise my camera made for every photo (a digital camera, but it does make that clicking noise). In other words, not the best quality photos...
The exhibit runs to October 28th and is on the second floor of the library. Just nearby is another wonderful exhibit featuring documents from the Pacific Northwest Artist's Archive. Really interesting documents from, you guessed it, Pacific Northwest artists. Be sure to check it out if you can! Photos, papers, ephemera, and more from some really important and inspiring artists span a long wall and thoughtfully curated and to think there is much more in the archives than what is on display. I am so glad that such an archive exists and protects such important information.Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10875305968239664790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889401692222940111.post-64048505138281543182016-09-06T13:42:00.000-07:002016-09-06T13:42:10.533-07:00Open Studios
